Welp, summer is officially upon us here in Houston, TX. In other words, IT. IS. HAWT! Besides the fact that I don’t want to feel like an overblown balloon, I haven’t really been having a hunch for heavy foods lately. So, I’ve been exploring the green side of feasting. Now, I am not the most healthy in the bunch. Honestly! [I won’t openly admit to scarfing down 5 traditional mild wings with potato wedges covered in shredded cheese and cajun seasoning from Buffalo Wild Wings within an hour of consuming meal #1 below.] Nonetheless, considering that I’m eating for myself and a little one now, I’m trying to make more health conscious decisions. Anywho, I thought I should share a couple of my favorite go-tos that I find mm-mmm-good!
#1: Snap Kitchen
Meal of Choice: Grass-Fed Beef Meatballs & Peppers
Price: $7.49
Description: Braised meatballs, sautéed peppers and onions, and a spicy marinara sauce.
My Thoughts: This meal is an explosion of flavor in your mouth! I’m not sure if you’ve ever had stuffed bellpeppers (Louisiana style anyway), but this is what it most closely resembles minus the rice. Now, Snap Kitchen offers meals in different sized portions, but I typically stick to the small in this one which comes packed with approximately 4 meatballs and peppers galore. I top it with a pinch of Tony Chachere’s seasoning and warm her up. Although this is the only meal of theirs that I’ve tried, their website offers a full menu and concisely details ingredients and nutrition facts of each meal offered. Now that’s impressive!
#2: Salata
Meal of Choice: (You guessed it!) SALAD
Price: $7.00
Description: Begin by choosing your favorite mix of different lettuces. Then move down the line to include your choice of over 50 different toppings — not just tomatoes and cucumbers, but jicama, bean sprouts, feta cheese, fresh strawberries, pumpkin seeds and more!
Pick from one of our 10 house-made dressings and then complete your meal by adding fresh, lean protein — including grilled chicken, pesto chicken, baked salmon, herb-marinated shrimp and several others.
My Thoughts: Think about your favorite fro-yo restaurant, but in salad form with an array of toppings… including some of which I cannot pronounce! Amazing, right? Exxaaccctly! As my friends would tell you, I’m not very adventurous when it comes trying new foods. So, with that being said, my usual salad from here usually consists of the following:
- Spring lettuce mix (extra spinach please)
- Sprouts – the most adventurous I’ll get. I dunno, I guess I just kinda feel healthier when I add these. No clue of what their health benefits are, or if they even possess any. Cool texture though!
- Eggs. Lots of eggs please. Protein right?
- A little Feta cheese
- Corn
- Strawberries and Pineapples on the side. (Makes me feel like I’m getting a free dessert with the main course.) Haha!
- Croutons (on the side because I don’t like them to get sopped up by the dressing)
- Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing
That pretty much sums it up. I hope you’ll visit these restaurants this summer and try something out for yourselves. Maybe I’ll even get a little festive and add to my feasting resume soon.
I’d love to hear what some of your favorite, flavorful, healthy choices are. Be sure to comment! In the meantime, happy, healthy eating folks!
