On Tuesday, August, 9, 2016, I joined forces with the newly formed chapter of the Younger Women’s Task Force of San Antonio, a partner of AAUW – American Association of University Women, to volunteer at Girls Inc. for their inaugural Back to School Boutique at their Making a Difference Conference. As a new resident here, I am always looking to network with other like-minded women especially in an effort to give back. Thanks to Meetup.com, I was able to speak with the chapter director of YWTF-SA the night before this event! She responded almost immediately and I was on board for the next day.
We were greeted with lunch with the Girls, Inc. team then proceeded to tidy up the boutique shopping racks of gently used clothing donated by women in the community. The conference hosted approximately 40-50 young ladies who we welcomed with stuffed gift bags. They then headed upstairs and took their seats at one of several tables. Each table had questions which engaged the attendees in tabletop discussion amongst their peers centered around some of the following topics:
- Conflict
- Furthering Education
- Career Choices
- Writing as an Outlet
The room was filled with paintings that were created by past camp attendees and contained inspirational messages. See some of the photos below.
Guest speakers and staff presented. Finally, the attendees were led to the boutique to ‘shop’ at no cost. How awesome is that?
Though I was not familiar with Girls, Inc., I am glad I was able to spend a few hours of my day/week with this phenomenal team of (you guessed it) ALL women! What’s even more amazing is that the leadership team consisted of mostly young women. Who doesn’t love girl power? What a way to set an example ladies! Thanks for having us!
